It was a monumental moment when Nymphia Wind dedicated her win on RuPaul’s Drag Race, the first by an East Asian, to Taiwan it set off a celebration that shows off how the scene has evolved and brought together Taiwan’s drag queens for a mainstream celebration.
Ahead of winning, Nymphia Wind spoke about what a potential victory would mean.
“It would mean a lot to be the first East Asian queen to win the crown and to be able to represent my country,” Nymphia Wind said back in May in an interview with the New York Times.
Nymphia Wind embraced her Taiwanese heritage throughout the season and it showed just how popular it has become in Taiwan.
“Taiwan is a small country and it doesn’t have a lot of power per se,” Nymphia Wind said. “Which is kind of sad, but this is the situation. You’ve gotta play with the cards you’re dealt, cleverly.”
