Based on historical records, Nagari Balingka from 1916, before being unified into a nagari named Balingka there have been two nagari, namely Nagari Kotohilalang and Nagari Paobstacle.
According to a source Fauzan Kari Sutan SHi, Kotohilalang was once a “nest” of Minangkabau art, besides also being the center of tariqa in the 1900s, it was also the center of the development of martial arts, because it gave birth to many famous silat teachers from this nagari.
“Formerly people in Minangkabau were nomads far away, obliged to walk, take the jungle out of the jungle, pass through the den of thieves and other dangers that threatened their lives, they equipped themselves with silat / silat, Silat was born and bathed, besides silat was born there was also silat bathin, then from this
silat developed dance arts, such as rental dance, wave dance, pasambahan dance, plate dance and others, Fauzan said.
“In the current era, Balingka is actively developing the environment, starting from pesukuan, jorong and nagari, and mobilizing the community to work together to build Nagari and start to intensify cultural arts through randai, dance and traditional music which is routinely held on the own awareness of residents every night of the week in Tapian, Bulaan’ continued Fauzan
