Is Twitter Really That Difficult?

Out of all the major social media platforms, I find that this one gets the most resistance and questions.  I’ve had clients tell me they just don’t get it and their target market wouldn’t be on Twitter! Here is an interesting fact though…the highest growing demographic on twitter right now is…Grandparents!  Twitter also has a community that is accepting of constant communication from your brand, meaning you can literally tweet all day and night.

To get the most out of Twitter however, one must fully immerse themselves into it and not just dip their toes in the water.  What I mean by this is that a business won’t get much from twitter by tweeting once or twice a week or even per day for that matter.  The reason why is due to the way twitter’s timeline works, your tweet can have a lifespan of between 10 minutes to an hour or two.  This is much different than Facebook, where a post can be live for up to 2 days!

Now you can see why a business must stay on top of their tweets to stay in tune with the twitter flow.  For the beginner this may seem like a time consuming platform, but they’re missing the point of twitter. Immediacy. Short and concise statements that are to the point and take no longer than a few seconds to read.  So the user should be able to tweet quickly and also interact with their followers just as fast.  So it’s not so much the time it takes to be immersed in twitter but more so the awareness to actively use it.

So I really think that the person who says they don’t “get twitter” is really saying they don’t know how it can be useful for them.  If a business doesn’t get it, then they think their customers won’t either. This is where they are wrong.  Look at the way sportscasters and newscasters report news from celebrities and athletes now…they talk about so and so tweeted this and that and also showing their own twitter handles too!  This shows that the world’s direct access to famous people is through their twitter. The key word here is direct access, and as a business having direct access to people is what its all about.

Almost every business has clientele that is on twitter whether you’re a B2B company or B2C company.  Twitter, because of its direct access methodology, is the best at enabling the growth of consumer relationships.  We all know that a consumer in a relationship with a company, buys from that company.  I hope this inspires some of you to get over your Twitter Fears and jump right into the pool of tweets because the experience can be life changing!
